About the Course

The Welder trade under the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) trains learners in metal joining, fabrication, and cutting operations using gas, arc, MIG/MAG, TIG, and plasma technologies.

It blends practical workshop training with engineering theory and safety practice, preparing trainees for jobs in construction, manufacturing, ship-building, automobile, and repair industries.

Approved by the Directorate General of Training (DGT), Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India.

Hands-On Training Highlights

Welding

Butt and fillet welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.

Piping

Pipe-to-pipe and pipe-to-plate welding practice.

Fabrication

Fabrication of frames, tanks, and pressure vessels.

Cutting

Gas cutting, arc gouging, and weld defect repair.

Inspection

Application of welding codes and visual inspection methods.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Perform Oxy-acetylene gas welding and cutting.
  • Execute Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) in all positions on MS plates & pipes.
  • Carry out Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW / TIG) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW / MIG-MAG).
  • Operate plasma cutting machines and carbon arc gouging equipment.
  • Weld stainless steel and aluminium using appropriate filler and electrodes.
  • Prepare, fit-up and tack structural components for fabrication.
  • Inspect and test weld joints using visual and NDT methods.
  • Follow safe working practices and first-aid procedures in the shop.

Each ITI / training centre must include:

  • Welding transformers & rectifiers (SMAW)
  • Oxy-acetylene gas welding & cutting sets
  • TIG / MIG / MAG machines with argon & CO₂ gas cylinders
  • Plasma cutting machine, carbon arc gouging tools
  • Positioners, rotators & fixtures for pipe welding
  • Welding consumables and NDT testing kits
